Do you care who people really are?

I just saw a Facebook friend request roll across the bottom of my computer screen. It is from Jack*. He is a “friend” of my ex husband (Rick*). Jack is much older and retired. I knew him and his wife from my then husband’s work outings and occasions over the years. There were some weekend events that we got to spend more time with them. They seemed nice and welcomed us warmly and wanted to spend time with us on those occasions. Jack really liked Rick.

Rick can be friendly and engaged if he chooses. But he is never a friend in any true or genuine sense, and not even close to that. He can make you think he is a friend.

I remember I had told Rick that I wanted have Jack, his wife and another couple, from his work, over to our house to have a game night. I thought it would be nice to play card games and spend time with them. He wouldn’t. As is typical for him he didn’t directly say no, but the same result is that he was not going to allow it.
