Can Religion Rescue Us From Domestic Violence And Abuse?

I went to get groceries today. I saw beside the milk and juice coolers, a brightly colored display. It was Allegro Coffee. They have a Pride Blend of coffee. Allegro Coffee is giving money to support community. They are now donating $10,000 to the Ali Forney Center. They help LGBTQ homeless youth around the country. The Ali Forney Center website is: aliforney.org

I did look at their website. I am not familiar with them. I do not personally know the people involved. But the idea of helping LGBTQ youth moves me. These kinds of human acts of love, make my heart sing.

I began to think about the question: Would the religious be compatible with helping rescue those of us who are hurting and need help? I know there are people that have spiritual beliefs and engage in religion, that do help. But my thought process and conversation is about broadly- religion as an organization and the people that adhere to the teaching and text of the bible. And based on my lifetime of experience, I do not believe we can or should try to create what we need inside of this institution and belief system.
