What could be written without distress and strife?

where i’m from
fairytales are always
written tragically

i found them grim
and distressing
i thought they
were supposed to be happy
i believed they would be
for me

i was taught a fatalistic tune
seeds of embedded beliefs
infested my lovely garden
invasive plants entangled me
insidiously

i’ve walked through
dark howling woods
got tangled in briars
had some frightening monsters
banging at my door

i learned fear
always another tragedy awaits
chaos ambushes
the happiest child

i rode clouds
to be near sunshine
always dodging villains
casting shadows over me
