the best man lost his pants

My cousin’s wedding was at the end of the pandemic. Things had opened up again. We were still wearing masks and taking precautions. It was surreal being out and around people. It seemed like crawling out from underground after so much stress and trauma that so many have endured.

I visited with family and cousins that I hadn’t seen or talked to for years. We ate, talked and enjoyed the music. It was strange navigating a social scenario after isolation. But some things remain the same. It seems likely that someone at an event such as this is going to get smashed with excessive alcohol consumption. At this event it was the groomsman, the best man. He is middle age and far beyond youthful recklessness of heavy overindulgence. But what does age have to do with it, really?

Toward the end of the evening, he was walking by the tables and suddenly lost his pants. I was facing his direction. Not wanting that visual to linger in my mind, I averted my eyes. Nobody wanted to see that. I saw the look on the faces of the people next to me. Another cousin’s wife turned around and saw it too. She grinned and said, “I guess pants are optional. Masks are mandatory!”

The best man groaned and grumbled as he reached down for his fallen pants.

I can’t begin to imagine why and why then his pants dropped to the floor, and I don’t want to think about it.

I’m just taking reassurance that his mask was securely fastened.
