This especially stands out to me. I think because I believe it is manipulation and if it is, it is insidious because of how it is done and done for control.

I am sad that this is your experience. My church was a contemporary, non-denominational Christian fellowship. Still, I and other women were not permitted to leave/escape from abusive spouses. After too many years, I did escape and will also never go back to religion. It is difficult to see it, but I too believe my church is a cult. My spouse benefited and encouraged me to stay within it and go to counseling. He knew they would keep me entrapped.
