“…What is he like?”

It was around 14 years ago and I was at the funeral home for calling hours. My uncle had passed away and I had traveled back home for the services. It was about 20 years since I graduated from high school. I hadn’t seen Jason since then.

Technically he was not a friend in the sense that he knew me well or spent time with me. He was a school friend in the sense that I thought he was a decent guy. I knew him as well as you would know someone in another grade. He was one of two guys in this school that were taller than me. We lived in a small rural area and my graduating class was 51 students. And a large number of those students went to the vocational school. There were two guys that I put in the category of “like”. I thought he was “cute”. I had a crush on him. He kept his distance and generally ignored me. That was typical of my experience. He once made eye contact with me, as he dramatically pretended to follow Dawn into the gym bathroom. He was acting excited about her. She was a very popular girl with the guys. I was — not.

When I saw him at the funeral, we talked a bit. Then he said, “I see the picture of you and that guy. What is he like?”

Does every family make photo boards displaying a look into a lifetime of family memories?
